UFH Manifolds FAQ

Does My Underfloor Heating System Need a Manifold?

Underfloor heating manifolds offer many benefits, among which are more fine-tuned control over the temperatures on the property, regulated flow rate, a more resilient heating system, and much more. Almost all modern underfloor heating systems are equipped with a manifold to better regulate temperature, ensure water is properly distributed throughout the system, and increase system reliability and resilience.

What Is the Best Place to Put an Underfloor Heating Manifold?

Because the heating manifold is responsible for controlling the flow of hot water to each underfloor heating zone, it generally needs to be placed in a central location in the property so it has easy access to pipes that flow to each individual heating zone.

If the manifold is placed somewhere remote, it can result in more complicated and fragile pipe networks with more substantial chokepoints.

How Do I Adjust My Underfloor Heating Manifold?

Each heating manifold is equipped with multiple flow meters that allow you to control the flow of water to individual heating zones on the property. To adjust the manifold and change temperature, you simply need to adjust the flow meter responsible for the part of your property you are interested in!

How Many Manifolds Do I Need for My Underfloor Heating System?

There are many factors that influence how many manifolds a property needs, chief among them are property size, layout, and number of rooms, system load, heating zone configuration, and system design. Ideally, a heating engineer will determine how many underfloor heating manifolds you need to install after closely inspecting the property and asking the residents about their lifestyle habits and needs!

The usual rule of thumb, however, is that a property needs a manifold per floor, with each floor having its own manifold responsible for controlling the underfloor heating throughout. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, however, and depending on the size of the property and its heating needs, one manifold for the entire property or multiple manifolds per floor might be necessary!

What Does a Manifold Do In an Underfloor Heating System?

The manifold’s job is to connect the heat source to the multitude of underfloor heating zones that exist on the property. It has a temperature gauge and can control the flow of warm water to each zone to achieve desired temperatures. Without a manifold, a heating system would simply have no control over the water flow to various parts of the property, making heating both inefficient and impractical.

What Temperature Should Underfloor Heating Manifold Be?

Which temperature a heating manifold should be set at is largely a personal preference. A few factors including the room/space layout, outdoor temperatures, and water supply all impact the optimal temperature. The most commonly used temperatures are within the 35C to 45C range.
